Earth Will Exceed 1.5 Degrees Celsius of Warming This Year

This year won’t just be the hottest on record—it could be the first to surpass 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Paris climate accord aims to keep warming below that level when looking over multiple years. It is “virtually certain” that 2024 will be the first year to be more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than in the preindustrial era, before heat-trapping fossil fuels began accumulating in the atmosphere, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) announced today. These dubious distinctions mean 2024 will surpass the remarkable record annual temperatures set just last year, one of the clearest markers of the unfolding planetary climate catastrophe. “This marks a new milestone in global temperature records and should serve as a catalyst to raise ambition for the upcoming Climate Change Conference, COP29,” Samantha Burgess, deputy director of C3S, said in a news release. The likelihood of that happening is placed in doubt, though, with the news t...

Space-Based Sensor Captures Lightning Data in a Bottle

Lightning is one of the most common natural hazards on Earth, and our warming planet is just beginning to feel the effects of a future with more severe thunderstorms and increased lightning strikes. But there’s a lot that atmospheric scientists don’t understand about how lightning works. Better lightning data could improve severe weather forecasts and warnings, and could help researchers to understand where hazards will increase in the future—and the associated impacts such as wildfires and need for lightning -proofed infrastructure. A unique optical sensor that just spent two years on the International Space Station could help fill those gaps. Researchers at Western Sydney University, supported by the U.S. Air Force Research Lab, demonstrated the use of an event-based vision sensor (EBVS) to record lightning strike details from above—at lower cost, higher resolution, and lower data rates than before. “The technology is based on how biology works and can see things that a norm...
Apple might soon revisit one of its most iconic computer designs

Apple may have just announced the super powerful new iMac, but the company could be planning to revisit another, similarly named desktop – at least from a design perspective. If recent reports are to be believed, Apple 's next desktop display could look less iMac M4, and more iMac G4. We've heard tell for a while that Apple is working on its first smart display technology for the home, with previous rumours suggesting it could resemble some kind of 'robot iPad'. But now, leakers are claiming the display could instead take design cues from one of the most iconic products from the company's history. According to everyone's favourite Apple leaker, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple ’s upcoming home smart display "will include old school iMac-like base. Apple is making progress developing its next entirely new product — a smart home screen — and it may be a little smaller than expected. The device will have a square display, I’m told, and be about the si...

On 31st October, passengers aboard American Airlines Flight 954 faced a tense and unusual situation when a series of mysterious banging noises began echoing from the cargo hold shortly after take-off. The flight, en route from Buenos Aires to New York, was abruptly turned back to Buenos Aires after the sounds raised fears of a potential security threat. Swift action: Armed teams ready to respond American airlines denies human presence, attributes issue to technical glitch Ongoing investigation keeps mystery alive As the plane ascended to 30,000 feet, passengers and crew alike grew increasingly concerned, with many speculating about the possibility of an intruder or another serious issue within the se...
A Visual Understanding of the Softmax Function

The softmax function is one of the most important functions in statistics and machine learning. It takes a vector of K real numbers and converts it into a vector of K probabilities that sum to 1. Softmax is a generalization of the logistic function to more than two dimensions, and it can be used in softmax regression (also known as multinomial logistic regression) to address classification problems with more than two labels. The softmax function can be also used as the last activation function of a neural network in a multi-class classification problem. In this case, the neural network uses the softmax activation function to compute the probability of each possible class for the target. This article provides a visual understanding of the softmax function, the intuition behind it, and the important mathematical properties that make it valuable in machine learning. We also discuss the relationship between the softmax and the logistic function and d...

(Yicai) Nov. 1 -- Morocco's Agadir, India's Trivandrum, Qatar's Doha, Mexico's Iztapalapa, and Australia's Melbourne have won the 2024 Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, also known as the Shanghai Award, in recognition of their achievements in advancing sustainability. Agadir was recognized for initiatives that enhance residents’ well-being through energy and water conservation, as well as an increase in green spaces per capita, according to a report released on World Cities Day yesterday. The city in southern Morocco has introduced innovative programs, including a cultural participation initiative, smart city technology development, public engagement enhancements, and improved citizen services and living conditions. Established in 2022, the Shanghai Award is a global initiative led by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, also known as UN-Habitat, and the municipality of the eastern Chinese city. The award aims to advance the United Na...
